                                         Provisional Driving License

First things first, and thats getting hold of your provisional car driving license! You can't apply for any driving tests or start driving without one!

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (or DVLA for short) are the people who arrange your driving license for you. To apply you need to obtain an application form (D1), normally available from your local Post Office. You must also provide some identity documents confirming who you are (i.e. passport, birth certificate etc.) and a passport-type size colour photograph taken against a plain light background. You can then send your completed form, documents and fee to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD. 

Your provisional driving license will be in two parts, a photo plastic card and a paper counterpart. You will always need to keep both parts and will need to take them with you whenever you take a driving test. Once you have passed your driving test you can then exchange your provisional license for a shiny new full driving license! Although, if you get any more than six penalty points on your license (for speeding and other illegal road activities within the first two years) then you will have to start all over again and have to take both driving exams again, so drive within the law!

From abroad? You can exchange your license for a full British one if you are from any other country in Europe without having to take another driving test. If you are the holder of a category B full license from any of the countries listed below you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months or you can exchange your license for a UK one. To make sure that you are able to continue to drive in this country then you must ensure that you exchange your license for a UK one before the 12 months is up. The same applies if you have a full category B license from Jersey, Guernsey or Isle Of Man.

If you have passed your full motorcycle test before February 2001 and you have provisional car entitlement on your license then you will not be required to pass the theory test.
