Becoming distracted at the wheel can lead to a steep rise in car insurance
Careless motoring is costing drivers dearly in increased costs of motor insurance premiums according to a recent study.
If a motorist is charged with the offence of ‘driving without due care and attention ’it can increase premiums by an average of 27 per cent. This is on top of any fine and penalty points they may also incur, just because they might have become distracted whilst behind the wheel.
The survey revealed that eight in 10 drivers admitted to getting ‘pre-occupied’ whilst driving. Doing things such as smoking, eating, slowing down to look at accidents and changing the radio station were the most common distractions and charges can be brought against motorists if an accident is caused as a result and 16,500 motorists are convicted
each year.
One car insurance expert said of the findings, “Although it may be unintentional, careless drivers are menaces on the roads and are a danger to both themselves and others. Not only are these bad driving habits, but also expensive habits if you are caught.”
Newly qualified drivers could be particularly hit hard as they could see their premiums double in price over the next twelve months, making it even harder for young drivers to find affordable cover.
The difference in charges for car insurance varies quite a bit for drivers with a clean licence and for ones who have a conviction for careless driving between different insurers.
