If you've got your provisional license, then you're ready to get started becoming a safe and responsible driver!
The theory test is your first test to pass and is a computerised touch-screen, multiple choice test, with also an added hazard perception test. Both parts have to be passed to get an overall pass certificate, fail one part and you have to re-take it all again. You have to pass your theory test before you can even apply for the practical driving test.
The Theory test. First of all we have the multiple choice theory part. Instructions will appear before you start the test explaining what to do. You have to get through 50 questions, each with several possible answers. Some questions will require more than one answer. You can also flag questions to come back to later. A case study will be shown which will be a short story, five questions will be based on it. You're allowed 57 minutes, and have to get at least 43 questions correct.
You can have a break of 3 minutes before the hazard test begins.

The Hazard Perception test. This test is a series of 14 short video clips to test out your awareness and reaction time to hazards on the road. The clips are of real life, everyday situations. At the start of the test a short introduction video will show you what to do.
Each video clip will contain at least one developing hazard. One of the clips will have two developing hazards. A developing hazard is something that will make you take some action, for example slowing down or changing direction.
The earlier you spot and click the mouse for the developing hazard, the more points you will get. The most points you can get is five points per developing hazard. Click too much though and it will think you are cheating and give you no points for that clip.
You can not go back and review the clips after.
The pass mark is 44 out of 75.
How do I book the theory test?
Only book the theory test through the official website here, or call 0300 200 1122.
I have a full automatic driving license, do I still need to take my theory test for a manual car?
No, you don't have to.
What do I need to bring with me to the theory test centre?
Bring both parts of your driving license (paper part and photo card). If you have the old style paper license then bring it together with your passport. Forgetting something normally means that the test will not go ahead and you will lose your fee.
What can I use to help me learn for the theory test?
Information on the Theory Test Case Studies is here. Also, try out World Driving's free mock theory tests here.
Should I pass my theory test before taking driving lessons?
We believe that taking driving lessons at the same time as revising for the theory test is more beneficial and will help you connect what you learn with the theory to what you're doing on the road.
Can World Driving help me learn the theory?
