UK speed limits explained for learner drivers

Speed limits in the UK

Speed limits can feel confusing when you’re learning, especially when the national speed limit sign doesn’t show a number. This guide explains the usual car limits around the UK.

Speed limits for cars in the UK

  • Built-up roads: usually 30 mph in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In Wales, the default limit on restricted roads is generally 20 mph. Always check the signs for local limits and exceptions.
  • Single carriageways: 60 mph national speed limit for cars.
  • Dual carriageways: 70 mph national speed limit for cars.
  • Motorways: 70 mph national speed limit for cars.

These are maximum limits, not target speeds. A signed limit can be lower, and roadworks or motorway signs may show a temporary or variable limit. Slow down further when traffic, weather, visibility or the road itself makes the limit unsafe.

What does the national speed limit sign mean?

The white circle with a black diagonal stripe means the national speed limit applies. For a car, that is 60 mph on a single carriageway and 70 mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. A dual carriageway has a central reservation separating traffic moving in opposite directions; it isn’t defined by how many lanes you can see.

Remember: the speed limit is the legal maximum for that road and vehicle. You’re responsible for choosing a safe speed below it when conditions require. Watch the video for a clear guide to recognising the different limits.
