A Y-junction is a type of road layout where one road splits into two, or two roads merge into one, forming a shape like the letter "Y". Unlike a standard T-junction, the roads usually meet at an angle, which can make it slightly harder to see.

Look for road signs and markings to understand who has priority. If you have to give way at a Y-junction, positioning is crucial so that you can see clearly and be seen by others. Move forward slowly to the point where you have the best possible view into both directions of the main road, without edging too far out and blocking traffic. Stopping too far back can seriously restrict your view, especially if buildings, hedges or parked cars are limiting visibility. Leaning forward in your seat can also help.

Aim to position the car so you are square to the road yourre joining, with the front of the vehicle just before the give-way line. From this position, you can properly judge speed, distance, and safe gaps before committing to the turn.

Good positioning at a give-way Y-junction improves visibility, and helps you make calm, confident decisions.

If you'd like to see this in real driving conditions, watch our "How to approach and deal with a Y-junctions" video above. It clearly demonstrates correct positioning, observations, and decision-making in a calm, step-by-step way, helping you build confidence and deal with Y-junctions safely on UK roads
